My 1997 Yamaha tape deck still also works. I just had the head cleaned with alcohol and it runs fine and still sounds great. It has been unused since year 2000.
But my Sony tape deck of the same vintage is not working anymore together with other Sony electronics which I think have a lifespan.

This is not a surprise, since probably the previous owner did not use them that much. These days, I am not even using my CD player any more (and yes, I do still have a cassette player – just in case!! )
